Urogynecologic issues from urinary incontinence to pelvic organ prolapse can have a significant impact on confidence, health and wellbeing.

One in three women will experience a urogynecologic disorder at some point during their lifetime. Though they occur more frequently in older women or those who have given birth, these conditions can develop at any age—but they don’t have to control your life.

Our Approach to Urogynecology

At Inspira, we understand that these topics are very personal and can be difficult to discuss. Our skilled urogynecology specialists are sensitive to patients’ needs and have years of experience diagnosing, treating and educating patients about these complex health issues.

Conditions We Treat

Our women’s health team is equipped to diagnose and treat a range of bladder and pelvic floor disorders, including:

  • Pelvic organ prolapse (cystocele, rectocele, uterine or vaginal vault prolapse), when pelvic organs become weak or loose and drop or press into your vagina
  • Urinary incontinence (female stress incontinence, urge incontinence and mixed incontinence), ranging from stress incontinence when you only lose bladder control if doing something like sneezing, coughing or laughing to a total loss of ability to control urination with urinary urgency
  • Overactive bladder, when you feel you need to go urgently and frequently and may leak
  • Painful bladder syndrome/interstitial cystitis, which can cause bladder pain in addition to a feeling that you need to urinate frequently
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI), acute or recurrent
  • Rectovaginal/vesicovaginal fistula, an abnormal connection between your vagina and bladder, urethra or rectum
  • Fecal incontinence, an inability to control bowel movements
  • Urethral diverticulum, a condition in which a pocket, sac or pouch forms in the urethra, a small tube through which urine passes to exit your body
  • Vulvovaginal conditions (conditions that affect female genitals) including Bartholin cyst, Skene’s gland cyst, labial hypertrophy, dyspareunia, atrophy and vulvodynia

Urogynecologic Treatments and Services

The course of treatment your urogynecologist chooses to pursue will depend largely on the type and severity of your condition, as well as your personal medical history, age and how long you’ve been experiencing symptoms. Several procedures can be performed in the office on an outpatient basis. Non-surgical tests and procedures include, but are not limited to:

  • Urodynamic testing
  • Cystourethroscopy
  • Intravesical Botox injection (injecting Botox inside your bladder)
  • Transurethral bulking agent
  • Bladder instillation
  • Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS)
  • Peripheral nerve evaluation (PNE)
  • Pessary fitting

Medications, pelvic floor exercises, vaginal devices (pessaries) and modifying your lifestyle or diet are effective ways to reduce symptoms and restore your pelvic health.

If surgery is necessary, Inspira’s urogynecologists are trained in transvaginal, laparoscopic and robotic surgery procedures to reduce discomfort and speed up recovery time. A vaginal approach is used whenever possible. This approach is the most minimally invasive and endorsed by the ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology).
