Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Curriculum

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship offers a robust curriculum and access to experienced, supportive faculty in convenient locations throughout South Jersey. Each specialty program includes weekly didactics, attending and guest lecturers, clinical experiences and sessions in our procedure labs and simulation center.

The curriculum goal is to provide comprehensive, relevant academic and clinical training in cardiovascular disease, ensuring that fellows are well-equipped to manage a wide range of cardiovascular conditions. Fellows will receive in-depth exposure to inpatient and outpatient settings, diagnostic techniques and advanced treatment methods. The curriculum fosters the development of clinical judgment, procedural skills and critical thinking necessary for practicing cardiology in diverse settings.

In addition to traditional clinical training, the program emphasizes hands-on experience in procedural labs and simulation centers, allowing fellows to refine their skills in a controlled environment. Fellows also engage in multidisciplinary case discussions, research initiatives and community-based cardiology practice to broaden their exposure and contribute to the advancement of cardiovascular medicine.

Rotations in Clinical Practice

Required clinical rotations include Consult Cardiology, Catheterization Lab Electrophysiology, Noninvasive Echocardiography and Nuclear Lab, Intensive Care Unit, Coronary Care Unit, Preventive Cardiology, Advanced Heart Failure and the Outpatient Continuity of Care Clinic.

Rotations also include research and the opportunity for additional electives, allowing them to tailor their training to specific interests within cardiology. Electrophysiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery rotations are provided at Cooper University Hospital, allowing fellows to gain experience in high-acuity care and advanced procedural techniques at a leading academic medical center.

Longitudinal Experiences

In addition to clinical rotations, fellows can participate in several longitudinal experiences integral to their development. One key aspect of the program is the Continuity of Care Clinic, which fellows participate in throughout all three years of the fellowship. This clinic allows fellows to establish long-term relationships with their patients, monitor their progress and become deeply involved in their care.

Fellows can also follow clinic patients when hospitalized, gaining invaluable experience as they actively participate in transitions of care. This hands-on experience enhances the ability to manage complex cardiovascular conditions across outpatient and inpatient settings, reinforcing their understanding of long-term patient management. Throughout their experience, fellows develop essential skills in patient advocacy, multidisciplinary collaboration and effective communication—key components of delivering high-quality, patient-centered cardiology care.
