Preparing for a surgery or medical procedure involves a well-coordinated effort between health care providers, the patient and the patient's support system. The process typically begins with a thorough consultation between you and your health care team, where you will discuss the associated risks and potential benefits of the procedure. You will also receive comprehensive pre-operative instructions, including guidelines on fasting, medication management and lifestyle adjustments.
Effective communication and collaboration between you and your health care team are paramount. This ensures that you feel supported and can actively participate in your recovery journey.
Following the pre-operative instructions in the days leading up to your surgery is crucial for a smooth and successful procedure. It's essential to adhere to any specific instructions your care team provides.
Your procedure may require fasting, which typically involves refraining from eating or drinking for a specified period, usually 12-24 hours before surgery. Fasting helps prevent complications during anesthesia and ensures a clear digestive system. Your provider may allow exceptions to your fast, such as clear liquids or low-residue foods. Please ask your care team for specific details on your required diet before your surgery.
Be sure to confirm transportation arrangements to and from our South Jersey facilities. Coordinate with a family member, friend or caregiver who can assist you in getting to the hospital and back home safely. Having a reliable support system on the day of surgery is vital, as you may experience discomfort and side effects of anesthesia and be unable to drive.
Pack a small bag with necessary items, such as your identification, insurance information and any paperwork the hospital provides. Additionally, include personal essentials like comfortable clothing, toiletries and any comfort items that may contribute to a more relaxed recovery experience. Please leave jewelry, electronics and other valuables at home.
Inform your care team about all medications you're currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and supplements. You will be provided with guidance on which medications to take or avoid the day before surgery.
Ensure a calm and stress-free environment at home the day before surgery. Get a good night's sleep and try to engage in activities that promote relaxation. Minimizing stress can contribute to a more positive surgical experience and facilitate a smoother recovery. Open communication with your care team is key, so don't hesitate to reach out if you have any concerns or questions leading up to the surgery.
On the day of surgery, the Inspira team will perform a pre-surgical assessment, checking your vital signs and making all necessary preparations. The care team will discuss anesthesia options and their potential effects. Then, you will meet with your surgeon to review the surgical plan and address any last-minute concerns.
Post-surgery, your level of care depends on the nature of the procedure. In the immediate recovery period, the surgical care team will monitor you closely in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). They will administer pain medication as needed and observe you for any signs of complications. When you are awake and alert, the team will give you instructions on post-operative care, including wound care, activity restrictions and medications.
Inspira will provide a follow-up plan for discharge, including scheduling appointments with your surgeon or primary care provider to monitor recovery progress. They can also address any concerns and adjust the post-operative care plan.
