Depression is a common condition that can affect your ability to function in daily life. At Inspira, we understand that clinical depression can take many forms and we offer a range of treatment options to address your unique symptoms.

What is Depression?

Depression is a mood disorder that affects how you feel, think and handle daily activities. Unlike occasional sadness, clinical depression is persistent, significantly impacting your ability to function. It can manifest in various ways, from overwhelming sadness to losing interest in activities you once enjoyed. Depression isn’t only emotional—it can also cause physical symptoms like fatigue, body aches and changes in appetite.

Types of Depression

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD) or clinical depression: Intense episodes of sadness, hopelessness and a lack of interest in daily activities that last at least two weeks.

  • Persistent depressive disorder (PDD): A less severe but longer-lasting form of depression where symptoms persist for two years or more.
  • Disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD): DMDD involves severe irritability, anger and frequent, intense temper outbursts that usually occur by age 10.
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): A severe form of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) that causes significant mood swings, irritability and depression in the days leading up to menstruation.
  • Depressive disorder due to another medical condition: Depression that is caused by a medical condition, such as a chronic illness or neurological disorder.

MDD encompasses the following subtypes:

  • Postpartum depression: A form of MDD that affects people after childbirth and involves mood swings, anxiety and feelings of exhaustion that prevent them from taking care of themselves or their baby.
  • Psychotic depression: MDD symptoms that are accompanied by hallucinations or delusions.
  • Melancholic depression: A form of MDD marked by a loss of pleasure in nearly all activities, often accompanied by significant weight loss and early morning waking.
  • Atypical depression: A disorder characterized by mood reactivity, increased appetite, weight gain and excessive sleeping.

What are the Symptoms of Depression?

People with clinical depression may feel persistently sad, hopeless or empty. They may also experience changes in appetite, sleep disturbances, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Other signs of depression may include irritability, unexplained physical aches and even memory problems. Depression can affect cognitive functions, making it harder to remember details or focus on tasks. Depression is treatable, and early intervention can save lives.

How is Depression Diagnosed?

Depression diagnosis involves a thorough evaluation by a behavioral health provider. During the initial assessment, you may complete a depression test or screening, which includes questions about your mood, behavior, and daily functioning. Your doctor will also review your medical history and any underlying conditions. Clinical depression requires professional support to determine the most effective treatment plan, whether it's persistent depressive disorder, severe depression, or another form.
