Bipolar disorder is a complex mental health condition that affects your mood, energy and daily functioning. But with the right diagnosis and treatment, managing your symptoms and living a full life is possible.

What is Bipolar Disorder?

The mood episodes associated with bipolar disorder range from manic or hypomanic periods of elevated mood, increased activity and impulsivity to depressive episodes marked by feelings of hopelessness, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. Unlike ordinary mood changes, the extreme highs and lows of bipolar disorder can last for days, weeks or even months and often interfere with personal relationships, work and daily functioning.

Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing treatment. The severity and frequency of mood episodes can vary from person to person, and while this condition can't be cured, a combination of medication, therapy and support can effectively manage its symptoms.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

  • Bipolar 1 disorder: Defined by at least one manic episode lasting at least seven days or by manic symptoms so severe they require immediate hospitalization. Depressive episodes often follow and can last two weeks or longer.
  • Bipolar 2 disorder: Involves hypomanic episodes—less severe than full manic episodes—alongside depressive episodes. Hypomania doesn’t typically cause the extreme disruptions seen in full mania but can still significantly impact your daily life.
  • Cyclothymic disorder: A milder form of bipolar disorder, involving periods of hypomania and mild depression that last for at least two years. These mood changes are less severe than those seen in bipolar 1 or 2.
  • Other specified and unspecified bipolar disorders: Other bipolar disorders include conditions involving significant mood changes that don’t fit neatly into bipolar disorder’s other categories. These forms can still cause significant distress and impairment

What are the Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder?

The symptoms of bipolar disorder vary depending on the mood episode you’re experiencing. Manic or hypomanic symptoms may include:

  • Increased energy and activity levels
  • Racing thoughts and fast speech
  • Impulsive or risky behavior
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Feeling overly confident or having an inflated sense of self-importance.

Symptoms of depressive episodes may include:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Changes in appetite
  • Feelings of hopelessness or worthlessness
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Sleep disturbances such as insomnia or oversleeping

Recognizing these signs and symptoms early can improve your treatment outcomes and overall quality of life. Talk to your doctor if you experience mood changes that affect your daily life.

How is Bipolar Disorder Diagnosed?

Bipolar disorder is diagnosed through a detailed evaluation of your medical history, symptoms, and mood patterns.

Doctors will rule out other conditions, such as thyroid issues or substance use, and identify any coexisting disorders like anxiety or ADHD that might influence your treatment plan. This comprehensive approach ensures an accurate diagnosis and effective care tailored to your symptoms.
