Read MoreGrief is one of the most painful human experiences. “Everyone grieves differently, and it’s not linear,” said Andria Balicki, LPC, LCADC, ACS, Manager of Outpatient Behavioral Health Services at Inspira Health Center Bridgeton. “Even though you can’t control the grieving process, there are resources to help you manage your emotions in a healthy way.”
Grief is how we respond to the loss of someone or something we love. Although grief is most often associated with death, it can also result from other forms of loss. Employment layoff, divorce, and chronic illness can also precipitate grief.
The grieving process is natural, and it can feel different for everyone. You may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, guilt, and loneliness. In addition to emotional distress, grief can have physical effects on the body. Some bodily symptoms of grief are digestive issues, disrupted sleep patterns, increased inflammation, and muscular pain.
For some people, grief is a short-term occurrence. For others, it can last for months or even years. Talk to your health care provider if you feel stuck in the grieving process or if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Mourning the loss of a loved one is not a straightforward process. No matter how much time has passed, unexpected reminders can trigger grief, creating a wave of overwhelming emotions. “Without the proper support, coming to terms with a loss can be difficult,” said Balicki. “Grief has no definitive endpoint.”
Fortunately, there are resources that can help. Inspira Health’s behavioral and mental health services provide a safe and compassionate environment to explore your emotions. Evidence-based treatment plans are customized to address your unique challenges. “Talking to a therapist can help you process difficult emotions,” said Balicki. “Identifying these feelings can help you come to terms with your loss.”
Grief is multidimensional, so its treatment requires a holistic approach. Inspira Health also offers primary care services for the physical effects of grief and spiritual care to meet the spiritual and emotional needs of all patients, regardless of religious background.
