Planned and unplanned Cesarean sections (C-sections) offer a safe pathway to childbirth. Explore your delivery possibilities—from initial considerations to supportive aftercare—with Inspira.

What is a C-Section?

Embarking on the journey of childbirth, you may find yourself exploring the delivery option of a C-section. Unlike traditional vaginal births, which follow the natural progression of labor, a C-section is a surgical procedure where incisions are made through the abdomen and uterus to deliver one or more babies safely. Delivery via C-section is typically recommended when vaginal delivery poses a risk to you or your baby, or when labor complications arise.

C-sections can be either planned or unplanned, and various medical factors or emergent circumstances often influence the recommendation for one during labor. Planned C-sections are typically scheduled in advance due to maternal health concerns, previous surgical history, or other factors deemed necessary by your doctor.

Unplanned C-sections, also known as emergency C-sections, may occur during labor due to complications that may jeopardize you or your baby’s health, requiring immediate surgical intervention. Whether planned or unplanned, our experienced team of OB/GYN physicians, anesthesiologists, and in-house pediatricians is committed to providing personalized care and support through your C-section journey, ensuring the safety and well-being of you and your baby.

How C-Sections Work

C-sections are performed under regional anesthesia, such as an epidural or spinal block, keeping you awake and alert while numbing the lower body. Our skilled labor and delivery team makes precise incisions in the abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby safely, minimizing incision size for quicker healing. The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour, with partners allowed in the operating room for support. After delivery, incisions are carefully stitched for optimal healing, and you'll typically stay in the hospital for a few days for monitoring and postoperative care. At Inspira, we ensure a safe, supportive environment for you and your newborn, facilitating a smooth transition into motherhood.

What to Expect When You Have a C-Section

When preparing for your C-section, it’s natural to feel a mix of emotions ranging from excitement to apprehension. Before the procedure, you’ll have thorough discussions with your doctors to ensure you understand the details of the C-section and have the opportunity to ask any questions or express your concerns. Our team will explain the anesthesia options available and address any anxieties you may have, guiding you through each step with compassion and understanding.

During your C-section, you’ll receive regional anesthesia via an epidural to ensure your comfort and allow you to participate in the birthing experience. Your support person, whether it’s your partner, family member, or friend, will be by your side in the operating room to provide emotional support and share in the joyous moment of welcoming your baby into the world.

When your baby is born, we make every effort to facilitate early bonding, such as skin-to-skin contact, whenever possible. Neonatal nurse practitioners are available 24/7 to ensure immediate care for your newborn, and if needed, access to Inspira’s Level 2 and 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is readily available. After your C-section, you’ll receive comprehensive postoperative care instructions and support to aid in your recovery process, including pain management and wound care guidance.
