Your care team may recommend a breast biopsy if your radiologist detects a suspicious lump or apparent growth. While this doesn’t necessarily mean you’re at risk for cancer. In fact, the National Breast Cancer Foundation reports that 80 percent of women who have a breast biopsy do not have breast cancer. However, a biopsy is one of the most accurate ways to determine if a malignancy/cancer is present. As with all types of cancer, early detection greatly increases your chance of a complete recovery.
During a biopsy, your doctor will remove a tissue, cell or fluid sample from the affected breast for further examination under a microscope. A breast biopsy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure in which the patient is placed under local anesthesia.
At Inspira, we use advanced techniques to ensure the biopsy process is as quick, and non-invasive as possible. We understand that awaiting results can be stressful. When screening reveals the need for a biopsy, we offer quick appointments and our radiologists reach out within 48-72 hours with feedback. In some cases, results can be revealed on the same day that your biopsy is performed.
If you’d like more information about cancer screening, diagnosis or prevention, our team is here to help.
There are three primary types of biopsies, and it will be up to your doctor to decide which procedure to perform based on factors such as the size and location of the growth:
If surgery is needed, Inspira, utilizes SAVI SCOUT® technology whenever possible. This passive device, which is roughly the size of a grain of rice, is implanted conveniently at our biopsy locations any day prior to surgery. During surgery, SCOUT® helps surgeons locate tumors, therefore sparing healthy breast tissue. In addition, this technology increases patient comfort and decreases procedure time.
Inspira’s Breast Cancer Program includes a nationally accredited Breast Center based in the Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. The Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons that recognizes centers that provide the highest level of quality breast care and undergo a rigorous evaluation process and performance review.
Early detection saves lives. It’s why we put so much emphasis on having the most innovative breast imaging and screening devices available for our breast cancer patients. Our local imaging centers provide access to digital and 3D mammograms, non-invasive ultrasound machines and breast MRI, among other technologies. When cancer is suspected, patients can move forward quickly through diagnostic imaging, and if needed, biopsy. Our goal is to reduce your stress whenever possible.
Inspira offers a multidisciplinary breast cancer team that meets regularly to discuss each patient’s treatment plan and progress. The team includes medical and radiation oncologists, breast surgeons, pathologists, radiologists and specialists in reconstructive plastic surgery, along with cancer coordinators, social workers, genetic counselors, registered dietitians and physical therapists.
Our coordinators connect with people when they have an abnormal mammogram, breast changes or lumps. They continue to work with everyone who is diagnosed with breast cancer to support her physical and emotional needs through treatment and survivorship. Coordinators are strong advocates ensuring care coordination and managing relationships with multiple specialists involved in a patient’s care. Inspira also offers ongoing distress screening/counseling and a physical rehabilitation program that can begin before treatment to improve outcomes.
Cancer care and services are offered at our convenient medical center locations.
