Inspira Health Welcomes Minimally Invasive Surgeon Christopher Bashian, D.O.

Minimally invasive surgery is the way of the future. With reduced pain, shorter hospital stays and a decreased risk of complications, laparoscopic and robotic surgeries are some of the best treatment options that providers can offer their patients.

A new general surgeon specializing in these minimally invasive and robotic treatment options recently joined the team at Inspira Medical Group’s General and Vascular Surgery practice in Mullica Hill. Christopher Bashian, D.O., received his degree in osteopathic medicine from Rowan University and completed his residency at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, where he earned the Resident of the Year Award in general surgery. Now, after his fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Inspira Health is welcoming Dr. Bashian back full-time.

Dr. Bashian believes one of the most important aspects of treating patients effectively is open communication. “Every patient is different, but one thing that everyone has in common is the need for their providers to listen to them,” said Dr. Bashian. “By listening to every concern, I’m able to tailor my treatment recommendations to each individual instead of just considering their condition.”

During his residency at Inspira Medical Center Vineland, Dr. Bashian learned that, while standard procedures like appendectomies can be similar, each patient presents with different symptoms, and the nuances between each surgery can vary. “All of the surgeons at Vineland exemplified the philosophy of providing individualized treatments for patients, which was instilled in me during my training there,” said Dr. Bashian.

Benefits of Minimally Invasive Surgery

Over the past few decades, many surgeons have come to prefer using minimally invasive surgery techniques because of the many benefits they provide over open surgery. “In my residency training, I noticed that minimally invasive surgeries generally had better outcomes than open surgery. And patients would always be amazed that we could complete their surgery through tiny incisions,” said Dr. Bashian.

In his training, Dr. Bashian realized that he wanted to be on the frontlines of technological advancements in surgery, and he learned that minimally invasive techniques could be applied to many different types of procedures. “Now, I strive to find a laparoscopic or robotic technique for every procedure I do. I offer it as the first option to patients, and it has allowed me to treat many people with a lower risk of complications,” said Dr. Bashian.

Dr. Bashian is trained in both laparoscopic and robotic techniques, including the use of the state-of-the-art daVinci Surgical System, available as a treatment option at Inspira Health. When thinking about the future of minimally invasive surgery techniques, Dr. Bashian said, “Inspira is here—we’re on the cusp.”
