MAJOR FUNCTION:
Non-licensed person who performs clerical and communication functions on a nursing unit. Must be knowledgeable of the policies and procedures of the unit and hospital. Dysrhythmia course completion required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience:
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Previous monitor tech experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
- Dysrhythmia course completion required.
- Certified nurse aide or unit secretary preferred.
Position Responsibilities
Provides continual observation of all patient rhythms:
- Mounts all rhythm strips appropriately on proper form.
- Documents interpretation of each patient's cardiac rhythm every 8 hours.
- Checks the memory of each patient as least every 2 hours.
- Erases all artifact.
- Does not erase memory until seen by the physician.
Provides timely, adequate notification of dysthymias:
- Reports life threatening rhythms to the appropriate nurse immediately.
- Reports dangerous rhythms to the appropriate nurse immediately.
- Reports non-life-threatening rhythms to the appropriate nurse within 5 minutes Seeks verification on rhythms difficult to identify.
- Documents dysrhythmias with strips from before, during and after episodes.
Maintains all telemetry units in working order:
- Keeps an accurate inventory of telemetry units.
- Changes batteries when necessary.
- Submits appropriate forms and units for repairs.
- Keeps accurate record of the telemetry unit number, start date and end date on each patient.
Communicates with nurses and physicians regarding telemetry:
- Notifies nurses of necessary lead replacement.
- Communicates changes in telemetry orders renewal and/or discontinuation.
Supports unit in providing indirect patient care:
- Answers unit telephone appropriately.
- Assists unit secretary with transcribing orders if received appropriate orientation and in-services.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Able to read, write and speak English.
