Read MoreMeeting with a registered dietitian (RD) can be a pivotal step in your health and wellness journey. Whether your goals are managing a chronic condition, achieving specific health goals or improving your overall nutrition, your dietitian is here to support you with personalized, evidence-based guidance tailored to your needs and preferences.
An RD is a highly trained health professional specializing in the science of nutrition. “Their expertise goes beyond dietary advice—they offer medical nutrition therapy to help treat, prevent or manage chronic conditions like obesity, diabetes and heart disease,” said Bradee Rojas, M.S., R.D., Metabolic and Bariatric surgery program coordinator at Inspira Health. “RDs understand that nutrition is not one-size-fits-all; they work closely with you to develop a nutrition plan that aligns with your unique lifestyle and cultural preferences.”
Your first appointment with the dietitian typically lasts at least an hour, giving you ample time to discuss your health and nutrition goals in detail. During this session, your dietitian will ask you a range of questions about your medical history, weight history, current medications and dietary habits. They may also evaluate your bloodwork and make recommendations based on those values to ensure your nutrition plan supports your overall health.
It’s normal to feel anxious about your first visit with an RD, perhaps worrying that they might police your eating habits and take away your favorite foods. However, this is far from the truth. “Your dietitian is an essential component of your health care team, dedicated to working with you—not against you,” said Rojas. “They aim to help you establish realistic health and nutrition goals that fit seamlessly into your life without depriving you of the foods you love.”
Follow-up appointments typically last between 30 and 60 minutes and help you stay on track with your nutrition plan. During these sessions, your dietitian will review your dietary habits, assess your progress toward your goals and address any challenges or barriers you may have encountered. These check-ins are an excellent opportunity to reevaluate your approach and motivate yourself to keep moving forward. Many patients find that these appointments provide the encouragement and guidance needed to maintain their momentum.
Preparing for your appointment in advance can help you make the most of your time with your dietitian. Write down any questions or concerns you have before your visit. “Remember, your dietitian is not there to pass judgment—they are there to support you,” said Rojas. ”Being open and honest about your health goals, nutrition preferences, food allergies and financial concerns will allow your dietitian to provide the best care possible.”
RDs play a crucial role in your health and wellness journey. By offering personalized nutrition advice and ongoing support, they empower you to make lasting changes that can improve your quality of life.
