The Skinny on Skin Cancer

The Skinny on Skin Cancer

May 21, 2021

While it may feel good to bask in the sun, too much UV exposure can have harmful effects on your skin. Inspira Spirit of Women hosted a virtual event where Nandini Kulkarni, M.D. gave us the skinny on what changes to look for on your skin and how to safely enjoy the sun. (Hint: it’s so much more than just wearing sunscreen.)

Did you know?

  • There are benefits to sun exposure in moderation including mood improvement, skin healing and Vitamin D production for bone strengthening.
  • Early detection of skin cancer is key. You should use the acronym A.B.C.D.E. to watch for changes in moles that may be indicators of potential melanoma.
    • Asymmetry in shape
    • Borders are uneven
    • Color changes (some parts are darker than others)
    • Diameter (larger than a pencil eraser may be a concern)
    • Evolving (it may be of concern if the mole is changing over time)
  • The best way to protect yourself against harmful UV rays is to SLIP, SLAP, SLOP!
    • Slip on a shirt
    • Slap on a hat/sunglasses
    • Slop on sunscreen
