Is Cancer Hiding In Your Genes?

Is Cancer Hiding In Your Genes?

Jul 29, 2019

A mammogram appointment can keep you one step ahead of hereditary cancer thanks to a powerful high-risk assessment program provided by Inspira Health.

It’s a familiar story. Someone's mother, father, brother or sister develops cancer, and family members begin to wonder if they might be high risk. Some might even seek genetic testing.

“What if — before a new diagnosis of cancer in your family — you could learn whether or not you were at higher risk for a hereditary cancer? And if you are, be able to reduce the risk of the disease from occurring in the first place,” says Nandini Kulkarni, MD, a double board certified, fellowship trained cancer specialist and director of surgical oncology for Inspira Health. “That’s the goal of Inspira's innovative high-risk cancer assessment program: to keep you one step ahead of hereditary cancer.”

It's free with every mammography

With every mammography, Inspira offers a free cancer risk assessment.
It evaluates whether you are at higher genetic risk for breast cancer, as well as ovarian, gastric, colorectal, pancreatic, melanoma, endometrial, and (for men) prostate cancers.

Other ways to participate

You can also talk to your physician who can refer you if they think you could benefit from the assessment. Or, if you are concerned that your family history might put you at increased risk, call the High Risk Cancer Program directly to schedule an appointment.

10 minutes can save your life

At your mammogram, you will fill out a short digital questionnaire — just 10 minutes to complete. The specially trained staff at all Inspira mammography locations can help with questions or concerns.

Inspira uses a powerful digital platform to evaluate the responses and mammography results against evidence-based guidelines to identify those with a higher than average risk for developing genetically based cancers.

Those with genetic 'red flags' will have the opportunity to meet with a nurse practitioner from Inspira's high risk cancer team.

A safe space for questions and concerns

At the visit, your questionnaire results will be fully explained, with compassion. If genetic testing is recommended, the nurse practitioner will explain the pros and cons and can collect a blood sample for testing during the visit.

Genetic testing results

If your test results reveal a mutation(s) for cancer, Inspira will make an appointment for you to meet with a specially trained and certified genetic counselor and/or with our program’s lead physician. They will explain the results in great detail and ensure that you fully understand your risk level and next steps.

Next: Personalized surveillance and a risk reduction plan

Inspira's multidisciplinary clinical team will develop a long-term personalized surveillance and/or a risk reduction plan with counseling, education, and testing. The goal is to detect cancer early, or even better, prevent it in the first place.

Advanced cancer screening and treatment

Inspira offers 3-D mammography and other advanced breast imaging, including ultrasound and MRI. Biopsies are performed using leading-edge techniques, with fast results from a board certified, fellowship trained radiologist.

Individuals who require follow-up will work with empathetic, board-certified, fellow-trained physicians who are specialists in cancer treatment. A multidisciplinary clinical team offers advanced surgical procedures, medical oncology, immunotherapy, and state-of-the-art radiation oncology. Clinical trials provide the most innovative options in cancer prevention and treatment.

At Inspira, we are dedicated to cancer prevention, early detection, and advanced treatment for our community. It's in our DNA.
