Dr. Fanelle Named 2013 Physician of the Year for providing exceptional care to cancer patients

Nov 8, 2013

VINELAND, NJ (November 7, 2013) The medical staff at Inspira Medical Centers, Inc. recently honored Joseph W. Fanelle, M.D., chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology as the 2013 Physician of the Year. The prestigious award acknowledges Fanelle’s years of service, contributions to the health network and medical staff, as well as his service to the greater health and wellness of the community.

“The physician of the year award is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon a doctor on our medical staff,” said Frank DeMaio, M.D., chairman of the Acknowledgment Committee. “To be considered a nominee, a doctor must have at least 20 years on staff, shown a devotion to medicine, set the highest of medical standards, supported his or her hospital and led an exemplary personal life. We are happy to welcome Dr. Fanelle into our esteemed group of ‘Physicians of the Year’.”

Born and raised in southern New Jersey, Fanelle earned his medical degree in 1987 from Hahnemann University Medical School. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at Cooper University Hospital. Throughout his education and residency, Fanelle was unsure which area of medicine best suited him. After finding inspiration in cancer treatment from a fellow resident, Fanelle pursued a residency in radiation oncology and was appointed chief resident of radiation oncology at Cooper University Hospital. His first position as an attending radiation oncologist was at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, New York.

In 1991, Fanelle joined the medical staff at Inspria (formerly South Jersey Hospital System) as the director of radiation oncology for the hospital’s Millville division. Today, he serves as the chairman for the department of radiation oncology at Inspira’s Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion in Vineland. For the past 22 years at Inspira, Fanelle’s passion for providing excellent care to patients diagnosed with cancer and guiding them through their treatment has only grown stronger, affirming his commitment to the field.

“Dr. Fanelle is often ahead of the curve in national trends in cancer care and he is passionate about quality,” said Melanie Pirollo, administrative director of Cancer Services at Inspira Frank and Edith Scarpa Regional Cancer Pavilion. “He refuses to settle for just meeting national accreditation standards for cancer care. Dr. Fanelle constantly pushes himself and our entire team to exceed the standards and provide the highest quality care to our patients. During his tenure, our cancer program in Vineland and Elmer has grown measurably.”

Throughout his career, Fanelle has always believed that personal patient care must go beyond the information on a medical chart. He works to set that example each and every day by focusing his attention on the patient first and then also on their spouse or family members.
